Travel secrets for SE Asia?

Lisa B asked:

My husband and I will take an extended trip to Thailand, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Laos and Burma (Myanmar) in January-February. We have been in Asia before, including two visits to Thailand, so we are not novices. Does anyone have any “inside” information you think would help us? (This is an accompanied group trip, so please no advice on how to get around on your own.)
Thanks for the personal items advice. I am too old to need it. Always did carry my own when I was young enough.
We have been in Thailand without a group, but some of those countries are just too hard for an older couple to tour on their own.

It’s difficult as most “inside” information revolves finding stuff on your own.

I could really only speak for Laos. In Luang Prabang wake up early around 6 to see the monks go about their business. Whatever locals charge you for something, suggest half the price (don’t go overkill and overnegotiate as they are less well off than us, but don’t let them overcharge you too much).

Smile! Everywhere you go smile, it goes such a long way, much more so than in the west. You will get better treatment, and people will smile back!

    Enjoy your trip!!!

Some advice for you in Cambodia and probably as an answer to the first comment!

Life is easy in Cambodia. To say that it’s hard to find sanitary-ware, i just don’t agree with that. Alot of supermarket u can go and get it. all small restaurant has it too.

Something to be aware of is traffic is not good. So when on the road should be in a car. don’t take motor taxi, cause the traffic is dangerous. if you are a foreigner, don’t drive yourself cause traffic rule are very complicated and messy, and u will get various fine or penalty along the way.

Be careful with shopping at market. Supermarket no problem. Always ask for a bargain half the price asked for.

I’ve been to Da Nang, Sai Gon, Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket. I think a group tour is going to be more of a hinderance than anything when trying to find “secrets” because from what I’ve come to know is that they can be out of the way. In Viet Nam the locals were very informative and were really into helping one experience Viet Nam and not only touristy things. Everything I’ve done has been getting around on my own. Again, the group might be an obstacle to overcome.
