What is the postal service like in Myanmar right now?

Chris M asked:

Does Myanmar have an adequate postal service? Are there huge delays in Yangon because of the cyclone? Since there are aid distribution problems, I had an idea that I could send items to individuals nearby (like small water filters) who maybe could get them to people in need. Is this a viable idea?

Anything going to the military is just fine, otherwise …

Very thoughtful of you, however reports from Burma suggest that that Junta is doing it’s best to prevent aid from reaching those who need it most.

The postal system was poor pre-cyclone, would guess its just about non-existant now

Good intention but not a viable idea.

All postal shipments (packages, not letters) to Myanmar will be inspected. If the regime doesn’t like what they find, it will be confiscated.

Since the gov. reject most of what UN and NGOs offer, your water filters will surely not reach who you intended. And they might come under scrutiny by some government / military outfit for having contacts to the outside world.
